We exist to help
that God is love
WE ARE MOVE UNITED CHURCH.
Everything we do is designed to encourage each other to move from theological ideas to actual immersion in divine love. We do that by creating three main environments:
BY VOLUNTEERING WITH SOCIAL JUSTICE PROJECTS.
BY MEETING TOGETHER IN COMMUNITY GROUPS.
ON SUNDAYS TO EXPERIENCE GOD IN OLD AND NEW WAYS.
Our entire approach is shaped by our values of being rooted, safe, open, interactive, collaborative, hardworking, and experimental.
Rooted: We find deep spiritual roots in the Christian story portrayed in the Bible.
Safe: We respect everyone’s level of engagement.
Open: We avoid black and white thinking by being open to new ideas.
Interactive: We invite discussion and participation in all of our environments.
Collaborative: We partner with other groups who are working for the common good.
Hardworking: We look for volunteers with a “can do” attitude who can “bring it.”
Experimental: We give each other permission to try and fail—as long as we learn.
Move United Church began as the offshoot of an existing congregation. Our lead pastor—then the young adult minister of a suburban church—one day sensed that he should drive downtown to pray. Following Columbus’s High St. for several miles, he decided to explore the new South Campus Gateway. Upon walking into the foyer of the Gateway Film Center, he sensed that the location would become a spiritual destination.
This prompting to start a new congregation in the space proved prescient. Approaching the theater managers about this possibility, he found out that for some time they had been looking for a congregation to rent their facilities on Sundays. Our lead pastor then began the process of securing funding and building connections with other local ministries. Months later on October 14, 2007 twenty-nine people met in the Gateway Film Center for the first gathering of our congregation.
Over the next several years, friends from Springfield, MO relocated to Columbus to join the church’s leadership team. Since that time, people from all over Columbus have become part of our church. In 2014, the members of Move United Church voted unanimously to become part of the United Church of Christ.
